Governance is about the process of governing but it is not simply about government. It is the way in which political, legal, administrative, cultural and economic institutions interact with the interests and demands of citizens to frame the society in which we live.

In the UK, there have been many innovative developments in the way in which society governs itself such as:

  • high-level, constitutional changes such as the recent establishment of devolved Assemblies in Wales and Scotland
  • public sector management reforms in the Health and Education Services
  • developments in civil society such as the growth of institutions active in protecting women’s rights in the UK.
In Pakistan, there is also great interest in questions of governance such as:
  • issues surrounding the form of government that will be accountable and representative of the people while at the same time delivering basic social and economic needs
  • questions on the status of women in society
  • developments in the legal and judicial system and the role of an independent media.
The British Council has been actively involved in the governance sector for many years. One of the British Council’s core objectives in Pakistan is promoting sharing, learning and debate on governance issues.
