Our work in governance in Pakistan is not just about high-level concepts such as electoral reform or the independence of the judiciary. For us, governance is also about supporting a framework that provides for the well-being of the individual and his or her family. It is about children having access to primary education. It is about mothers and children having a chance to survive childbirth through access to adequate nursing care. It is about giving the next generation access to training so that the instruments of the state can function. It is about people feeling that they matter because their government listens.
We work with partners across Pakistan to promote these aims through our development and training services work. For example, the British Council Peshawar held a seminar on The Concept of Human Rights and its Application in the Developing World on 6 April 2000. Dr J. Rehman, Lecturer, Law Department of the University of Leeds, UK was the speaker. About 40 participants attended the seminar including the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Mr Afrasiab Khattak, lawyers, academicians, representatives of the police, the media, various human rights organisations, and non-governmental organisations.
