Legal and judicial affairs
Promoting legal and judicial reform is one of the four priority areas of governance work that the British Council undertakes in Pakistan. Below are some examples of our work in this area.

Human Rights in the Law Curriculum

The British Council and British High Commission are currently supporting a year long project that will introduce human rights into the teaching of the LLB undergraduate law degree at the Pakistan College of Law, Lahore. Working with the The College of Law of England and Wales in the UK, the project will also develop and design a complete human rights module for the Masters LLM degree. Pakistan College of Law is the largest private sector legal education institution in Pakistan and offers a LLB degree in law to about 400 students.

Seminar on Media Laws in Pakistan

A National Seminar on Media Laws in Pakistan was organised on 27 January 2000 at the Lahore Press Club with the aim of reviewing laws affecting media freedom in Pakistan and to generate a positive debate leading to a process of reform.

The seminar included discussions between press representatives from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Hyderabad and Peshawar to formulate a set of recommendations on press laws. These recommendations were then presented to Mr Javed Jabbar, Adviser to the Federal Government on National and Media Affairs, at the concluding session of the seminar.

The session was attended by journalists, representatives of NGOs as well as students and teachers of Mass Communications. Mr Javed Jabbar and Mr Shafqat Mahmood, Information Minister for the Punjab Government, were the main speakers.

Book launching of ‘Muslim Family Law’ April 1999-2000

A detailed new study of Muslim family laws titled ‘Muslim Family Law’ was launched in Pakistan on 19 April 1999. The book is the work of Dr Werner Menski of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London and H.H. Judge David Pearl of the Immigration Court in the UK and has recently been published by Sweet and Maxwell in London.

The British Council Lahore and Pakistan College of Law, Lahore jointly organised the book launching ceremony. Honourable judges of the Lahore High Court, eminent lawyers, law professors, educationists, journalists and law students attended the function.
